The birdcage and saloon cars were a mixed bunch. They all had this pattern of wire mesh to protect passengers though. To suit all prototypes the mesh is supplied in two strips with enough to model any birdcage car with some to spare. It is a bit of work to prepare the panels required but the end result is fantastic. On the real thing the wire was stout, and got stouter with repeated layers of paint. At Ferrymead I measured the result at something around 3/8″ which is pretty close to scale with this etch.
